Platelet Distribution Width (PDW) is a measurement of the variability in platelet size distribution in the blood. When platelets are activated in inflammatory environments, a morphological change occurs, and therefore measuring PDW gives a direct indication of platelet activation. High PDW is associated with inflammation, such as that caused by vascular diseases and various cancers.
